Hints & Tips

We know that applying to industrial placement schemes is daunting and nervy experience. That’s why, at PPS, we try to make it as comfortable and as enjoyable as we can for you. All that we ask is that you understand what PPS is looking for and how you can demonstrate that you are the right fit for us.

Online application form

  • Spell and sense check your application.
  • Don’t waffle – include quality information that is relevant.
  • Tell us where, how and when you demonstrated and used a particular skill – not just that you have it.

Telephone interview

  • Make sure you have researched the role and PPS before your interview.
  • Avoid giving one word answers, such as ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
  • Keep your CV/application form in clear view, on the top of your desk, or tape it to the wall near the phone, so it's at your fingertips when you need to answer questions.
  • Smile. Smiling projects a positive image to the listener and changes the tone of your voice.
  • Speak slowly and clearly – avoid ‘erm’-ing and ‘ahh’-ing.
  • Take your time - it's perfectly acceptable to take a moment or two to collect your thoughts.

Face-to-face interviews

  • Prepare a variety of examples you can give to the most common competency questions – try to use different examples to your earlier interview answers.
  • Know why you want the role – and be prepared to explain your passion for it.
  • Prepare your own questions to ask.
  • Remember that, at the end of the day, an interview is just a conversation between two people.
